Yesterday we had the honour to address you upon the subject of this prisoner and made certain respectful requests. Up to the present we have received no reply, although considering the exceeding urgency of the matter and in view of the fact that the least delay might prejudice the interests of the Chinese Government, we had entertained the hope of an answer before this.

We beg to inform you that the matter stands thus: the prisoner was remanded until 3 p.m. to-day to pend the result of this communication and any counter representation to be made on the prisoner's behalf.
